Partner Families

Selection Criteria

Habitat housing is not a handout, but rather a helping hand to carefully selected Hart County partner families. There are three criteria for qualifying as a potential partner family:

  1. The family must be living in an inadequate housing situation.
  2. The family must be able to pay for the Habitat house.
  3. The family must be willing to partner with Habitat in constructing the house (250 sweat equity hours per adult).

Partner families are selected without consideration of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, but preference is given to applicants who have demonstrated family stability and have lived in Hart County for at least three years. Applications for a Hart County Habitat for Humanity house are solicited periodically, depending on when resources are available.

Partner families must make a down payment of 1% of the estimated total house cost and be able to make monthly payments for mortgage costs, real estate taxes, and homeowner's insurance. The down payment is usually about $320-$500, and the monthly payment is about $215-$325, depending on the size and location of the house.

The minimum required monthly income is about $935-$1775. A family with sufficient income to obtain conventional home financing will not be considered.
